I am a native of Rhode Island, growing up in the town of Tiverton. Restaurants like Evelyn's Drive In Seafood (in Tiverton) and Flo's Clam Shack (in Portsmouth) were always summertime favorites. Our family would pack in the car and drive to these waterfront diners. You would get out of your car and order your meal through a take out window. Then you would go to your car or an outdoor picnic table, and wait until they called your number over a loud speaker letting you know that your food was ready. After dressing your food with the appropriate condiments you would retreat to the confines of your vehicle or picnic table to enjoy the fresh, sweet fruits of the local shores.
As delicious as the food was, it was the family time spent, that stays most in my memory. These flavors and memories are what I want to bring to my New England replants here in Fort Myers.
